Unfolding the Employment Story in Uttar Pradesh

The article examines labour market changes in Uttar Pradesh and fi nds a deeper employment crisis in the state. The analysis shows a sharp decline in workforce participation and an increase in unemployment levels across all age groups and education levels after 2011–12. Employment decline was particularly high among the youth and the most educated. Female workforce participation hit a historic low in 2018–19.

Employment of Women in Rural Punjab

High economic growth has failed to improve the status or the participation of women in the labour market in developing countries. Taking into account the case of low labour force participation among women in rural Punjab, an analysis of existing policy prescriptions—of improving agricultural growth and crop diversification as a panacea to the problem—is revealed to be insufficient in improving the female labour force participation rate. In order for policy to successfully address these issues, it must consider the constraints imposed by gender norms.

The New Moral Economy

Convincing billions of Indian citizens that demonetisation and digitalisation is a panacea for the country’s growth challenges and a solution to its core economic problems requires constructing a new moral economy, and a “different” imaging of India in the minds of the people. Incorrect economic arithmetic and the illusion of digitalisation are not the only problems to be negotiated. The moral political project overtly and covertly being attempted, is of far greater significance.
