From 'Farms to Pharmacies': Beginnings of a Sad Decline

The notion that a cocktail of synthetic nutrients, manufactured by pharmaceutical agencies, is required for a balanced intake is a completely mistaken one. A diet of cereals, pulses, legumes, fruits and vegetables can meet these micronutrient requirements.

Strategies to Combat Under-Nutrition

Household nutrition security in the 21st century must come to mean a lot more than avoidance of starvation. Foods for families must be adequate; that is, not just meet the bare energy needs for survival, but provide all the nutrients essential for normal development. The changing nutrition scene is influenced directly and indirectly by several interrelated factors. There is a need to evolve nutritional-orientation of food production programmes; examine and reverse the mistakes of the past and use new knowledge and technologies to evolve new strategies for combating under-nutrition.

Towards Food and Nutrition Security

C Gopalan While the challenges involved in ensuring food and nutrition security relate to both the production and distribution of food, inequitable distribution rather than inadequate production is the major factor underlying India's current problem of malnutrition. The inequality cannot be corrected through exercises in tokenism and populist 'give away' programmes but only through creation of and support to income generating skills among the poor.

Challenges to Public Health Systems

As we move to the next century we face the cruel paradox that despite growing prosperity and spectacular technological advances, the task of ensuring health and well-being for the citizens of the world is becoming even more difficult and expensive and complicated than ever before. To be sure, we have conquered some old 'enemies' to public health, but new challenges

Population Problem Need for a Total View

'Population Problem': Need for a Total View C Gopalan Are we at all conscious of the long-term implications of our population policy which may become manifest only in the latter half of the next century? What is our long-term policy with respect to not just population growth but to population structure?

Health Nutrition Technology Transfer

C Gopalan The transfer of health/nutrition technology related to basic health care and eradication of undernutrition in poverty-stricken populations cannot be looked upon as a purely commercial operation. The subject raises important humanitarian and ethical issues and calls for the adoption of international codes to govern and facilitate equitable technology transfer as between developed and developing countries.

The Mother and Child in India

We have in the country a number of ad hoc programmes in the field of child health and nutrition being carried out sporadically here and there as isolated departmental activities. This patchwork of disjointed, disparate programmes with no set goals and motivated by short-term considerations do not add up to a coherent and consistent national policy.

Measurement of Undernutrition-Biological Considerations

Biological Considerations C Gopalan This paper argues that (a) in the assessment of 'adequlacy of calorie intakes in a community, it will be justifiable and prudent fat us to continue to use the recommended mean calorie requirement and not the M-2 SD as the yardstick of calorie adequacy; and (b) it will be prudent not to place sole reliance on calorie intake figures for measurement of undernutrition but to continue to use the approaches hitherto in vogue for the assessment of nutritional status of individuals and population groups
