Condition of Undertrials in India

A large number of the poor, the Dalits and people from the minority communities are languishing in jail as undertrials because of a property-based bail system and a poor legal aid mechanism. This article suggests ways in which both these tools could be strengthened for speedy dispensation of justice.

Prosecution as Persecution

The court needs to protect the right to protest against the arrest of activists such as G N Saibaba, without labelling them anti-nationals. What constitutes anti-national activities has always been contested by intellectuals but accusing them of punishable offence is an attempt to silence the debate.

A perusal of the state of prisoners incarcerated in Andhra Pradesh reveals a tragic story of denial of treatment to prisoners who are ailing and a rise in deaths of those in custody. This is indicative of the utter callousness of the prison authorities.
