The Ugly Side of Football

Tragedies such as the one in Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, Indonesia in October 2022 throw light on the dark side of football. The passions evoked by the sport along with stadium mismanagement are often the cause of such disasters. There is considerable literature on violence in stadiums, which is often fuelled by male aggression, the spectators, and club loyalties, often tribal in nature. However, stadium disasters are more often than not caused by poor infrastructure and administrative negligence, including overselling of tickets and weak security.

Charisma Through Communication: Comparing Modi's Media Strategy to Nehru and Indira

This paper looks at how Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi used traditional media–radio and print–and their communication styles. It then goes on to examine Narendra Modi’s use of media and his ways of communication, drawing comparisons with the Congress when it was dominant. The paper concludes by arguing that though there are certain continuities in the use of mass media in the two eras, the changes are equally significant.

In the 2019 Indian general election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi countered corruption charges made by the Indian National Congress's (INC) Rahul Gandhi through the Chowkidar campaign. The author analyses how Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were successfully able to employ the Chowkidar slogan on social media and integrate it with their offline campaign. The Chowkidar campaign and use of social media, the author argues, are a part of Modi’s populist playbook, noting the similarities the most recent campaign has with the BJP’s Chaiwala campaign in the 2014 general election.
