Let Their Holinesses Meet

A propos U Kalpagam's interesting letter ('Shankaracharyas and Academics', February 17), it is great that the respected Holiness Shankaracharya of Joshimath, Swami Vasudevanandji, inaugurated an international seminar in an ICSSR institute. May we now expect that the said institute would soon invite an eminent person like Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Delhi, to inaugurate a similar event? The day is not too far, we hope, when both Shankaracharya and Shahi Imam, sitting on the same podium, would jointly address a seminar.

Adam Smith (The Wealth of Nations, 1776:796) proposes that priests should be required to "study science and philosophy". His reasoning is simple and decisive. To quote Smith: "Science is the greatest antidote to the poison of superstition". Now, shall we imagine, ICSSR centres will soon organise special courses of "science and philosophy" for priests? Adam Smith also advises the state to institute "some sort of probation" for priests. Will the ministry of human resources development consider it?
