The rapid economic growth over the past decade is hardly reflected in the development of Indian railway infrastructure. The annual growth in route kilometres between 2000-01 and 2010-11 was a negligible 0.2%; the number of stations added during the entire decade was only 240 on the base of 6,843; and the total staff actually declined from 15.49 lakh to 13.66 lakh. The net revenue, however, showed a more than eightfold increase from Rs 1,071 crore to Rs 9,022 crore because of intensified use of infrastructure combined with increase in freight traffic rates.
