Cities are not investment destinations, they are places to live in and they must provide equal access to all.

India is poised to witness exponentially accelerated urbanisation as the Narendra Modi government takes up plans to build a 100 new cities. While cities are places of hope and opportunity to many, an informed vision rooted in our needs is required to ensure their equitable use by all. In India, according to the Census of 2011, of the 377 million Indians staying in urban areas, 65 million or about 16% are slum dwellers. Every eighth urban child in India in the age group of 0-6 years stays in slums, according to a report compiled by the union government. Clearly we have failed in making just cities.
