Au Revoir

In a “Concluding Unscientific Postscript,” a long-time admirer of this journal rues the decline of the role of the public intellectual in upholding standards of consistency, rigour and probity.

This is my last postscript for the sinister, goateed Editor whom—masochist that I am—I shall miss terribly. This gentle, self-effacing, soft-spoken individual—widely portrayed in the media as a man whose voice barely rises above a whisper—was, for all that, by no means averse to kicking backsides: only, he cannily reserved that activity for his oldest friends.

But what’s the occasional bruised posterior when set off against the fact that his journal never failed to wag a stern Editorial finger in the cause of denouncing public wrong-doing and saving the state’s soul (assuming it exists)? It is this that I should like to dwell on briefly in this valedictory piece for one who has done so much, through EPW, to provide us all with a forum for relentless, rigorous and reasoned dissent.
