An overview of the actors and issues involved in the debate over the relation of the United Kingdom with the European Union in the run-up to the referendum in June to decide whether it should exit the latter.

The European Union (EU) has long been a flagship for regional integration. However, it is currently facing a serious counter trend as citizens of member states are increasingly evaluating the costs and benefits of EU membership. This trend is seen most vividly in the ongoing debate in the United Kingdom (UK) on its position within the EU. On 20 February, after months of negotiations, British Prime Minister, David Cameron, announced a deal for a “special status” for the UK within the EU. A referendum on this deal, and Britain’s future in the EU, will be held on 23 June 2016.
