Baluta and Joothan amid Humiliation

Self-expression in the form of autobiographies by Dalits endeavours to expose the hierarchical sociocultural space that subjugates Dalits to the margins, in the literal as well as metaphorical sense. As injustice and violence are endemic in Dalit life, contestation and confrontation are synchronous in the Dalits' response to the same.

I am deeply indebted to the writings of Gopal Guru, particularly those on humiliation and Dalit personal narratives, which helped me immensely in developing the article.

Wedding season in the village meant good times for us ... All the leftover food—the lhapsi porridge, the malpuas, the crisp puris—would come to us (Pawar 2015: 41).
