How Many More Poverty Lines?
This is with reference to the article “India’s ‘Poverty of Numbers’: Revisiting Measurement Issues,” by Gaurav Nayyar and Rohini Nayyar (EPW, 27 August 2016). The authors have presented four sets of estimates, and have concluded that there is clearly a need to correlate calorie-based poverty ratio with other indicators of poverty.

What disturbs me is the content of the article by Moushumi Das Gupta titled “Govt Panel on Poverty Does Not Know What It Is” (Hindustan Times, 11 September 2016). Three expert committees have been set up to define and combat poverty in the last eight years.
