Ramkrishna Mukherjee - I

This is a painful letter to write and I have been putting it off. After my father, sociologist Ramkrishna Mukherjee, passed away on 15 November 2015, I found his will forbidding any kind of religious ceremony following his death. Anticipating his wishes, we had already foregone the mukhagni ritual at the crematorium on 15 November.

Therefore, when the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata—where he worked for the greater part of his career—agreed to finance/host a two-day international event subsequently titled “Special Lectures Commemorating Professor Ramkrishna Mukherjee,” the family welcomed the proposal, knowing it would bring us the much-needed closure.
