Other Dana Majhis

The story of Dana Majhi who walked nearly 12 km with his wife’s dead body on his shoulders from a hospital in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi (Odisha) because the staff refused to help him with transport, caught the nation’s attention and was even carried in the international media a few months ago.

The administration, which conducted a probe into the matter, blamed him for taking the body without asking the medical authorities and the officials did not allow him to perform rituals in time because they wanted him to answer their questions first. After this incident was publicised, Dana Majhi began getting a lot of sympathy and attention from the government, activists, and organisations. His village, which had not seen any politician or babu, suddenly witnessed a line of dignitaries coming there. He has been provided financial assistance and the educational expenses of his three daughters are also being met by the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, and some foreign organisations too offered help.
