India's War for the Empire
India's War: The Making of Modern South Asia 1939-1945 by Srinath Raghavan, New Delhi: Allen Lane, 2016; pp xvii+554, ₹699.
World War II (1939–45) was a momentous event in modern world history. It changed the social and political map of the world and especially of the Indian subcontinent forever. Several fine works have appeared in recent times on the diverse aspects of this war. Among them is Srinath Raghavan’s authoritative account, India’s War: The Making of Modern South Asia 1939–45.
The dominant historical narratives of World War II have been largely and mostly Eurocentric. India has received relatively less critical academic attention in terms of its contribution to and participation in the war.
