Stop Criminalising Dissent

President of the Committee for Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) and Delhi University teacher S A R Geelani was detained by the Delhi police as he came out of his college on 15 February. He has been charged under Sections 124A, 149 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code for organising a meeting at the Press Club to commemorate the hanging of Afzal Guru as a travesty of justice.

The fundamental question is whether a democracy can take refuge in an archaic colonial law like the Sedition Act to strangulate itself. The duplicity of the present Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dispensation is further evident as it is the same Macaulay, whom it blames for the erosion of Indian culture, who enacted this law to stifle the anti-colonial resistance.
