‘Surgical Strikes’ on Policies of Liberalisation

A response to Amit Bhaduri’s article titled “Danger Zones of High Economic Growth” (EPW, 22 October 2016). Important questions of policy and economic understanding are raised.

The following is a rejoinder to the highly readable and yet, provocative piece by eminent economist, Amit Bhaduri titled “Danger Zones of High Economic Growth” (EPW, 22 October 2016).

The tirade has begun once again! Just when the economy is in the midst of some of the much-needed growth surge, the eternal, irredeemable “pessimists” have resumed their “surgical strikes” on policies of liberalisation and on the private sector. The entire development paradigm of the recent (last 25) years is on the chopping block as it were. Worse, what is sought to be portrayed is that almost all our chronic, structural and historical socio-economic maladies—glaring as they still are—have been the “gift of liberalisation” to Indian society. This impression needs to be placed in proper context.
