This refers to the letter “Hazards ofGM Crops” by Bharat Dogra (EPW, 20 May 2017). The author rightly said that the effort of multinational corporations (MNCs) to dominate the agricultural sector of India is imminent.MNCs are waiting with genetically modified (GM) crops. In complicity with the authorities,MNCs are usingGM mustard as the Trojan horse to invade and destroy Indian agriculture.

Surprisingly, when the world became aware of the harmful effects of agro-chemicals (“Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson, 1962), India adopted an agro-chemical-based green revolution to achieve food self-sufficiency. Having done irreversible damage to the environment and society, India is now focusing on biotechnology as a solution to the problems facing agricultural development.
