Random Memories

I am not a social scientist or an economist. I am related to the Economic Weekly (EW) and the Economic & Political Weekly (EPW) by marriage. My husband Sankho was the youngest of Sachin Chaudhuri’s brothers. Sachin, who we called Dada, was the eldest.

Whenever we raised a serious issue with Dada, he was prone to say “Don’t tell me, write.” Sankho was a sculptor and an indefatigable protagonist of folk and tribal arts. Unlike Dada he was incapable of “a clean copy.” His writing was totally chaotic and I plead guilty of putting an article he wrote for the EPW into some sort of order. Our son Udit, who was much exercised over the Ahmedabad pogrom of 2002, dashed off a piece on the social and economic factors behind it and which was published in the EPW. That is the extent of our direct contribution to the journal.
