Festive Kitchens
Women and girls cook on most days and even more during festivals, while the men and boys rejoice.
During festivals there is celebration and joy in every household. But a closer look would reveal that this euphoria by and large is confined to the masculine public sphere, while the domestic circle of women, consciously or unconsciously, accepts most celebrations with mixed feelings. The comfort and security associated with celebrations is more or less confined to the realm of masculinity and patriarchy.
Kitchens, as perpetually gendered spaces, play an important role in the context of festivals as well. These spaces become conformist habitats, which tame the tendencies of emancipated women to “transgress.” The gendered narratives around festivals script the method and tale of obeisance for the modern woman.
