The Feigned Lives of Facebook

Art and philosophy can show the way for a social media that embraces life in its totality, allowing for the projection of our true selves on social media.

What is common between a Romanticist’s poetry, a work of art, a cherished piece of fond memory, and a Facebook post? Each one of them is a distortion of reality, an inconspicuous abridgement of the vast panorama of experiences called life.

I learnt about my friend’s European sojourn through a series of his Facebook posts. An enticing photograph at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport suffixed with a hashtag #OnceInALifetimeExperience declared his departure to Europe. What followed was a flood of photographs on Facebook: alluring landscapes of Switzerland, exotic cuisines of France, opulent galleries of the Musée du Louvre, nourishing solitudes along the beaches of Portugal, profuse malls of Milan, liberating strolls through the English countryside, and the dreamy horizons of the Thames.
