One-dimensional View of Integration


By now it is fairly evident from the intended policy of the union government that it has chosen to use language like “vibrant,” “strong” and “integrated” for India as its main template for acquiring the political legitimacy to exercise its power.

However, what is interesting to note is that the chief spokesperson of the union government, in his most recent pronouncement, has picked up a much safer template of “One Nation, One Constitution.” The government, by implication, seems to be suggesting that everyone, including itself, is bound by the guiding principles of the Constitution. It further seems to suggest that the moral progress of the government and its governing class depends on the commitment to the relatively large and more encompassing universe of moral values such as freedom, equality and human dignity, which make up the core foundation of the Constitution.
