The volume under review, as the preface puts it, is a “surprise present” (p xi) for Mahesh Rangarajan who was the director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) between 2010 and 2014. Most of the chapters included in the volume are revised versions delivered at the NMML (p x). The essays contained, however, are not conjoined by a unifying understanding or a consistent theme, making the review of this collection as a whole a rather difficult task. Therefore, the editor’s classification of the book into three broad themes—first, the global context; second, looking out from India; and third, the making of foreign policy (p 1)—is utilised here for the sake of clarity.
