History Matters
In enabling us to acknowledge differences, and developing skills of thinking and analysis, history matters.

We seem to be heading towards a round of “revision” of history textbooks during an unprecedented crisis created by a pandemic, lockdowns, and an economic downturn whose magnitude is difficult to assess. Textbook revisions require scholarly deliberations so that latest developments in the discipline are shared with learners. Pedagogical strategies that encourage critical thinking are equally important. Yet, such issues are unfortunately not part of the present agenda, where the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education is evidently considering “rectifying” perceived “distortions”—apparently defined in terms of the supposed denigration of the “Hindu” past and glorification of the “Muslim” past—in existing textbooks.
