Behind the Early Unravelling of Joe Biden’s Promise

The inability and unwillingness of the new United States administration under Joe Biden to usher in a new deal-like transformative policies and correct course on foreign policy, is due to the persistent control of the big business that is endemic to the sociopolitical systems of the capitalist West.

Joe Biden won the presidential election in November 2020 on the promise of bringing the United States (US) “back to normal.” This promise had limited appeal within the country, but international allies of the US had much hopes of return to “multilateralism” and consensus-based joint efforts in tackling the “global issues and challenges.” Even rivals or “competitors” (as Biden puts it) had a hope of return to at least some sense in US foreign policy after four unfathomable Donald Trump years. But even before Biden completed 100 days in the office, expectations of civilised diplomatic behaviour by the higher ups in the new US administration faded away.

Definitely, on the domestic front, for a moment, the Biden administration raised high hopes with pro-people structure of its American Rescue Act, 2021, widely known as the COVID-19 Stimulus Package. These hopes continued for some time with Biden’s proposal of the American Jobs Plan, widely known as the infrastructure package. But, like a flash in the pan, even before Biden completed six months in the White House, his “transformative agenda” began to lose its traction even within his country (Nichols 2021). As days have passed, it is becoming more obvious that the Biden administration is up against the challenges that Biden’s centrist politics cannot surpass.
