Afghanistan: Present Tense, Future Imperfect

The Taliban takeover cannot be understood outside the hegemonic economic and geopolitical interests.

The foreign occupation of Afghanistan is over after two decades. The smooth and quick regime change in Kabul resulting from an agreement and tacit understanding bet­ween the imperial power and insurgent group is underway. Despite the United States (US) involvement in negotiations for the formation of a Taliban-led government, the US propaganda ­machinery and knowledge production centres have gone into an overdrive to project the insurgent group as an evil force. Interestingly, the right wing in America is using the rise of Taliban and the capitulation of Afghanistan security forces, armed and trained by the US, as a massive failure of President Joe Biden’s foreign policy. Some sections of the media are also blaming Pakistan for the perceived US failure in Afghanistan.
