In March 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for the interlinking of two rivers, the Ken with the Betwa (Times of India 2021). The Ken–Betwa river link is meant to divert “surplus” water from the Ken to the Betwa river. The multi-crore project has been criticised both on grounds of being prohibitively expensive as well as the fact that there is no substantial proof that the Ken has enough water to give the Betwa (Sanghera 2020). Apart from these

aspects, this project takes centre stage against the making of recent history.
