Ukraine and Surrogacy

As much research has shown, it is economic precarity that is the main factor for women willing to be surrogate mothers. With India banning commercial surrogacy for foreigners, other markets seemed to have opened up. At the same time, older markets have also obtained a fresh lease of life, Ukraine being among them.

Nepal has prohibited the practice of surrogacy for Nepalese women. But Indian and Bangladeshi women are being moved to Nepal as surrogates. The image of an El Al flight waiting to take away surrogate babies born to gay Israelis, after the earthquake in 2015, remains in my mind. The birth mothers were left to fend for themselves.
