What Is at Stake in the Archives of the Films Division of India?

The lack of clarity and transparency in the impending restructuring of organisations like the Films Division of India and the National Film Archive of India, under the umbrella of the National Film Development Corporation of India, disenfranchises the real stakeholders of India’s fi lm heritage—the Indian public.

The Films Division of India (FD) along with the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) together hold the collections of films, documents, and ephemera that constitute valuable historical resources and offer invaluable insight into the country’s varied pasts. The recent order (Indian Express 2022) that announced the merger of these institutions, along with the Children’s Film Society and the Directorate of Film Festivals under the umbrella of the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), is alarming on many fronts and raises a pertinent question: Who are the stakeholders of the country’s film heritage and how should it be managed?
