Seventy-five Years of Uttar Pradesh Economy

Though improvement has taken place in most of the development indicators in the state, its relative position does not show any remarkable upward movement, and it remains in the category of the least developed states with regard to socio-economic parameters.

The 75th anniversary of our independence provides an occasion to look critically at the achievements and failures over the period in the different areas of development in the country as a whole as well as in different states. The paper discusses the performance of the economy of Uttar Pradesh (UP) during the last 75 years. In an earlier paper, we had analysed economic changes in UP during the first 50 years of independence (Singh 2000). The present paper draws heavily from the findings of the earlier paper and extend the story till 2020–21. The analysis is based on secondary data collected from various official sources.
