Recent Explorations in the History of Science in India

History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine in India edited by Suvobrata Sarkar, Oxon and New York: Routledge, 2022; pp xxi + 328, `1,495.

This well-curated volume titled History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine in India, as per the book’s blurb, focuses on “South Asia’s experience of modernity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.” The editor of this book, Suvobrata Sarkar, lays out its major themes in his introduction, emphasising the concept of “HISTEM”—history of science, technology, environment, and medicine—as proposed by historian Deepak Kumar (in whose honour the volume was brought together). An understanding of HISTEM is essential, Sarkar writes, for a better understanding of the histories of colonial and postcolonial South Asia. To that end, the volume consists of individual case studies dealing with several diverse themes in HISTEM in modern South Asia, although overwhelmingly concerned with regions and societies located in (post-partition) India.
