A Pioneer in Managerial Unionism

LV Subramaniam, the pioneer in managerial unionism in India, passed away on 8 April 2023 in Singapore. He was 89.

Today, the managerial staff in the banking industry is well-organised, with a capacity to go on strike in pursuance of its demands. But six decades ago, the staff could never think of going on strike. Managers and officers, who were called supervisors, could not form a union. They were deemed “part of the management” as they supervised the clerks and peons called workmen under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. In contrast, workpersons could unionise under the Trade Unions Act, 1926.
