The Politics of Delimitation in Assam

The delimitation exercise in Assam has not only redrawn the boundaries of the constituencies but also political fault lines of the state. Hailed by a section as a step to safeguard the rights of indigenous communities and critiqued by another for ensuring skewed representation, the act may have multipronged impact on the state politics ahead of elections.

Delimitation of J&K

After a long period of two years, the process of delimiting the assembly and parliamentary constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir has finally come to an end. The union government went on with the process of delimitation with unflinching focus, disregarding the immense opposition to this exercise by most political parties on the ground. It is essential to enumerate the basic aspects of this delimitation, and analyse how these can have profound political consequences in the union territory of J&K.

Constitution 91st Amendment Bill: A Constitutional Fraud?

The Constitution 91st Amendment Bill seeks to cancel the redistribution of parliamentary constituencies due after the 2001, 2011 and 2021 censuses. In doing so it undermines what should be an essential and prized characteristic of the Lok Sabha, that each voter has an equal voice in the national parliament. When considering the bill, parliament should therefore consider whether a short-term expedient to prevent delimitation should be allowed to undermine the democratic core of the Constitution.
