Does Minimum Wage Affect Informal Jobs across States in India?

The presence of a large informal sector as the mainstay of semi-skilled and unskilled workers raises questions on how the adoption of minimum wage in the formal sector could affect job opportunities. Using NSSO data on unorganised employment in non-directory manufacturing enterprises across 19 major states in India between 1989 and 2011 supported by time series data for minimum wage, net state domestic product, school enrolment, etc, it is found that the minimum wage has a positive impact on NDME jobs.

Determinants of Child Labour in India

This paper aims to explore and analyse both the demand- and supply-side determinants of child labour by performing a cross-sectional analysis in rural and urban areas of select districts across Indian states. Results show that the availability of government schools is an insignificant factor in reducing child labour in the rural areas whereas the urban areas of districts with higher per capita district domestic product have more child labour. Additionally, districts with high labour demand in agriculture and household industries tend to report higher incidence of child labour.

While heated debates persist in developed countries regarding the continuation of the minimum wage laws, they still remain popular around the world. Unemployment concerns around the minimum wage fade away when the monopsony nature of the labour market is taken into consideration. Given the distinct nature of workers earning minimum wages in low-income countries when compared to high-income ones, it remains significantly effective in tackling inequality in the former. The job polarisation because of the labour-replacing technologies of today underlines the importance of such a measure. Thus, there is still a need for minimum wage, more so for low-income countries.
